		<description>
ABOUT SUZY GILLETT&#38;nbsp;
For Bold Voices. For Resonant Cinema.

I believe in cinema that risks something.Films that shake off the expected, cross borders, and leave space for audiences to feel, think, and change.

My work is about discovering the filmmakers who see the world differently — and helping them make work that can only come from them. It’s about precision in development, trust in collaboration, and courage in execution.

I champion stories that speak to human experience in all its contradictions: tender and political, intimate and epic, rooted and universal. I look for filmmakers with an emotional truth at the heart of their vision — and I help them shape that truth into powerful, crafted work that travels beyond its origin.

Over the past two decades, I’ve moved fluidly between development, production, programming and mentorship — bridging the creative and the strategic. From London to Marrakech, Turin to Berlin, I’ve built relationships that sustain creative risk: producers, funders, editors, distributors and artists who understand that bold work demands both structure and freedom.

My process is both editorial and instinctive. I listen carefully. I ask the right questions. I bring rigour, but I also protect the spark. Whether in script meetings, edit suites or festival selections, I work to bring clarity of intention — and to make sure the work reaches its audience in the strongest possible form.

Cinema is a collective act of faith — and my role is to create the conditions where that faith can thrive: where filmmakers feel seen, supported, and challenged to make the most ambitious version of their vision.

Because great films don’t just tell stories.They change the world.

		<description>

FILM EDIT CONSULTANT&#38;nbsp;
I’m an experienced film edit consultant with a sharp eye for story and rhythm — helping filmmakers find clarity, flow and emotional truth in the edit.

I work with directors, editors and producers at the rough-cut stage to identify what’s working, what’s missing, and how to shape the film into its strongest form. My approach is collaborative and precise: combining narrative insight, structural analysis and a deep respect for the filmmaker’s vision.

From fiction to documentary, I’ve helped projects strengthen story arcs, tighten pacing and enhance both visual and emotional coherence — guiding films towards that moment when everything finally clicks.

How I Work:• Watch and evaluate rough cuts with detailed notes• Provide clear, constructive feedback on structure, tone and pacing• Offer creative and technical recommendations to elevate the final film• Collaborate with directors, editors and producers to refine and realise their vision

Areas of Expertise:Rough Cut Evaluation • Narrative Structure &#38;amp; Continuity • Emotional Rhythm • Story Logic • Technical Quality • Feedback &#38;amp; Editorial Notes

Curator&#38;nbsp; /
Artistic Director
Over the past two decades, I’ve curated and directed film programmes and festivals that champion bold, underrepresented voices and explore cinema’s power as a cultural and political force.

Early WorkFrom 2000 to 2005, I curated Screen Station, a film club dedicated to music documentaries, later hosted at the Ritzy Cinema. I also collaborated with Africa at the Pictures (2002–2003) and the Tokyo African Film Festival (1998–2003), fostering early cross-cultural excha
nge between filmmakers and audiences.

Ciné Lumière &#38;amp; the French Institute (2004–2008)As Artistic Director of Mosaiques Festival of World Culture at Ciné Lumière, I expanded the event from one venue to six and deepened its international reach. Working closely with Unifrance, I also programmed the annual Renault French Film Festival and co-curated Women’s Cinema from Tangiers to Tehran, highlighting female filmmakers across North Africa and the Middle East. Other notable seasons included Reel to Real and Africa Film Focus.

Festival Leadership (2012–2013)In 2012, I curated the Film Strand for the Marrakech Biennale, followed by serving as Artistic Director of Film Africa (Royal African Society) in 2013 — the UK’s largest African film festival, showcasing work by directors such as Alain Gomis and Mati Diop.

Barbican Centre (2015–2023)As Course Leader for the Young Film Programmers initiative, I established a training and mentorship programme that has shaped a new generation of curators across London. Alumni now work at venues including the ICA, the Garden Cinema, and the BFI, and have founded collectives such as Tape Collective and Brixton Community Cinema , each committed to platforming vital, overlooked cinema.

Recent and Forthcoming Work

Mason &#38;amp; Fifth (2025)In June 2025, I was invited to curate a Bespoke Library of DVDs and year-long film series at Mason &#38;amp; Fifth, Westbourne Grove. The project invited 52 guest curators to select their seven favourite films — a living archive of contemporary taste and personal storytelling.Event highlight: Liliana Cavani’s “La Pelle / The Skin” (1981), introduced by Suzy Gillett and described by Elliott Jack as “a tapestry of resilience and rupture”.
Visit Mason &#38;amp; Fifth →
EVENT DESCRIPTION: 7 September 2025Join Suzy Gillett as she introduces Liliana Cavani's 'La Pelle/ The Skin' (1981).
“This week at M&#38;amp;F Cinema, we journey through the lens of Suzy Gillett — filmmaker curator, and lifelong conspirator of cinematic resistance. From her years guiding bold voices through the London Film School to her own radical storytelling across continents,Suzy curates not with caution but with conviction. Her selections defy the flat and the familiar. These are films that trouble the surface, rattle history, and speak in tongues bothpersonal and political. Suzy’s programme is a tapestry of resilience and rupture.” Elliott Jack.

In November 2025, I joined the Romanian Film Festival in London&#38;nbsp; team.
I am currently researching&#38;nbsp;Films for Peace — a festival-in-progress exploring cinematic representations of war, peace, and reconciliation, curating an evolving list of international titles that reflect the politics of empathy. With a focus on AFTERMATH .

 Training

Barbican Young Film ProgrammersBarbican Young Film Programmers (Course Leader, 2015–2023)

Between 2015 and 2023, I served as Course Leader for the Barbican Young Film Programmers, a seven-month training programme in film curation and event production. I designed and led the curriculum, providing participants aged 16–25 with hands-on experience in programming, marketing, and delivering public film events.

At the heart of the programme, I founded the Chronic Youth Film Festival, an annual event entirely curated and produced by the students, hosted by the Barbican Centre. The festival became both a platform for emerging curatorial voices and a launchpad for diverse, inclusive film culture in London.

As lead mentor, I worked alongside Barbican curators and guest tutors from across the industry to guide participants in developing creative confidence, critical insight, and collaborative skills. Each cohort programmed, marketed, and delivered their own festival weekend — learning every stage of the process from idea to audience.

Graduates of the programme now work at MUBI, ICA, Open City Documentary Festival, and across major London venues. Others have founded innovative collectives such as Tape Collective, Brixton Community Cinema, and new curatorial projects at the BFI and Barbican — continuing the programme’s legacy of empowerment and independent thinking.

The Young Programmers 2020 collectively comment:'We are united by our collective emotional response and desire to share these films with the world!

In these trying times we selected these titles based on their depiction of people coming together and looking for joy in the most unlikely circumstances.

We are championing cinema that portrays the power of change on a personal and local level.'

Emerging Curators&#38;nbsp;Course Concept&#38;nbsp;

I devised and ran the Emerging Curators Lab following on from my expertise at running the BYFP alongside Gali Gold from the Barbican Cinema.&#38;nbsp;The Emerging Film Curators Lab is a free career development programme designed to give young people a chance to establish themselves in the UK cinema exhibition sector. The successful individuals and teams, who are now presenting their funded programmes at the Barbican, have received training from experienced film curators to give insight and practical information on how to programme, produce and market their own cinema screening events.
Barbican Cinema is delighted to announce the Emerging Film Curators Series, developed by up-and-coming curators, who took part in the Barbican’s Emerging Film Curators Lab in &#38;nbsp;2023, designed to&#38;nbsp;widen the range of voices on screen. This four-part series, which explores the notion of&#38;nbsp;change in the social and political landscape, begins in January and continues to March 2024.
Visions from the Wake: Grief and its Afterlives in Global Cinema – Tue 30 Jan 2024Stims: Towards a Neurodiverse Cinema + ScreenTalk with directors Georgia Kumari Bradburn, Sophie Broadgate and Edward Smyth – Sat 10 Feb 2024Unseen Avant-Gardes: Women Experimental Filmmakers in Yugoslavia,1960-90 + ScreenTalk with writer Owen Hatherley – Thu 29 Feb 2024Changing with the Tides – Sun 24 Mar 2024
The series starts with Visions from the Wake: Grief and its Afterlives in Global Cinema, curated by Cici Peng, which&#38;nbsp;explores the subject of death and grieving in cinema and looks at alternative ways of mourning. This event also includes a live reading from former gal-dem editor-in-chief&#38;nbsp;Suyin Haynes&#38;nbsp;and a guided meditation from&#38;nbsp;Rieko Whitfield.The second event in the series, Stims: Towards a Neurodiverse Cinema and Filmmaker ScreenTalk, is curated by&#38;nbsp;Lillian Crawford. This collection of eight short films, spanning animation to documentary, by five neurodiverse directors, will be followed by a panel discussion focusing on what a neurodiverse cinema looks like.

Further programmes taking place between February and March 2024 are: Unseen Avant-Gardes: Women Experimental Filmmakers in Yugoslavia, 1960-90&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;ScreenTalk&#38;nbsp;curated by&#38;nbsp;Teodora Kosanović, a collection of rebellious and poetic experimental short films made by women filmmakers during a culturally significant period in Yugoslavia; and&#38;nbsp;Changing with the Tides, an immersive journey across coastal communities in the UK, with short films that document the&#38;nbsp;dramatic changes in fishing industries and communities over the last seven decades. Curated by&#38;nbsp;Aryan Tauqeer Khawaja,&#38;nbsp;Sophiya Sian,&#38;nbsp;Tony Yang, this programme will be accompanied by live poetry readings and guest speakers.

Giving people their flowers while they can still receive them is something I hold close to my heart. I first met Suzy Gillett in 2020, during the Barbican’s Emerging Film Curator Lab, where her guidance as course leader was an important step in shaping my path and profoundly deepened my curatorial understanding of the moving image as a space for dialogue and discovery. It was following that lab that I curated my first-ever screening for the Barbican cinema, a moment that, in many ways, still feels like the beginning of everything that followed. I remain profoundly grateful for Suzy’s generosity, insight, and the foundation she helped me build at such an important stage of my career. 💛”

Course Director &#38;amp; Lab Founder – Low Budget Film Forum &#38;amp; Making Waves Lab

From 2009 to 2014, I designed and directed two major Creative Europe–funded international labs for emerging filmmakers at the London Film School:

The Low Budget Film Forum — an annual script development lab for writer–producer–director teams graduating from European film schools. Designed as a bridge from education to industry, it supported participants in developing their first feature projects through intensive mentorship, peer workshops and collaboration with producers and funders.

Making Waves — a marketing, distribution and exhibition lab held during the Berlinale at the DFFB (Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin). The lab used hands-on case studies of Berlinale titles to explore festival strategy, sales, and audience development, giving participants practical tools to navigate the transition from premiere to market.

Both programmes were financed by the Creative Europe MEDIA Programme and delivered in partnership with a consortium of Europe’s leading film schools:London Film School (UK), DFFB (Berlin), La Fémis (Paris), ESCAC (Barcelona), The Danish National Film School (Copenhagen), SZFE (Budapest), UNATC (Bucharest) and Columbia University School of the Arts (New York), alongside festivals including TIFF (Transilvania International Film Festival), Les Arcs European Film Festival, and Berlinale Talents.

Across these five years, I led an international network of educators, industry mentors and emerging filmmakers — creating a framework that bridged education and industry, empowered new creative voices and fostered long-term professional collaboration across borders.

Adapt4Cinema (A4C) – Script-to-Screen Lab (Course Partner, 2014–2016)

In collaboration with Scuola Holden (Turin), I co-directed Adapt4Cinema (A4C), a Creative Europe–funded international training lab focused on adapting literature for the screen.

Working in cross-disciplinary teams of three — a writer, producer, and visual artist — participants developed full feature film adaptation packages, including treatment, visual concepts and production strategy. The programme encouraged creative collaboration between artists from different storytelling traditions, fostering a holistic understanding of adaptation from page to screen.

Delivered with partners Scuola Holden (Turin), MOME (Budapest), and the London Film School, with festival collaboration from the Turin Film Festival, the lab brought together European creative talent and industry experts in screenwriting, production, and packaging.

This initiative extended my work in developing international lab frameworks that connect education, creative practice and market readiness — bridging art and industry through collaboration.&#60;img width="2048" height="1365" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7c437215fe6d0f7b5d911b3f203d676b362813a59baa657628c36873ce5f6da8/10286964_557201804395175_1449406078002241198_o.jpg" data-mid="36324539" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7c437215fe6d0f7b5d911b3f203d676b362813a59baa657628c36873ce5f6da8/10286964_557201804395175_1449406078002241198_o.jpg" /&#62;

&#38;nbsp; international film labsFILM GARAGE&#38;nbsp;Film Garage – Genre Development Lab (Consultant &#38;amp; Script Mechanic, 2015–2016)

Film Garage was a Creative Europe–funded training programme conceived by Simone Fenoil at Scuola Holden (Turin), designed to transform genre concepts — from thrillers and horror to road movies — into viable first feature projects.

As part of the team of “mechanics,” I worked hands-on with writer–director teams to refine scripts until they were production-ready — tightening structure, strengthening genre elements, and deepening emotional and thematic impact.

The lab served as a bridge between film school and the professional industry, providing practical, market-oriented development for emerging filmmakers.

Delivered in partnership with Courmayeur Noir In Festival, Film Garage brought together filmmakers, producers and trainers from across Europe to explore how genre storytelling can be both artistically ambitious and commercially resonant.

I can do a scene by scene breakdown and skype or a report with key issues.I can watch a rough cut / assembly and offer pertinant feedback.“I’m more than impressed” &#38;nbsp;

Recently asked to feedback&#38;nbsp; on a script to tweak prior to application for production funding - just heard they got their funding.
“thank you for your relevant yet empathic feedback.”

 please write to me at gillettsuzy(@) gmail.com for consulting on your feature script or treatment (documentary and fiction) or rough cut edit.
